Market Surveillance
It is the responsibility of this department to visit all business premises in
the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen to ensure compliance with the full
range of consumer protection legislation. We do not normally announce that
we are to make a visit to a premises but will endeavour to call at an
appropriate time.
During our inspection programme we visit premises to ensure that any
legislation relevant to that particular business is being complied with. Minor
discrepancies will usually be dealt with by giving advice and guidance as to how
compliance can be achieved in the future. More serious infringements or advice
that has been ignored may lead to prosecution.
In addition to our inspection programme we conduct regular sampling
initiatives where we take samples of products, such as food and drink,
agricultural feeds, toys, electrical equipment, and second hand goods.
These items are then submitted for analysis to determine compliance with
the relevant legislation.
